349. earthworks
the tumulus that is Sizergh roundabout
today bears the scars of
a recent altercation
with a car or a lorry
or maybe a van
judging from the gouge rent in the earthworks
uprooted saplings
and a deep swathe of brown earth
slicing through the greenery
was it survivable?
I ask myself
– I always seem to
when I see tyre marks and orange cones
mangled railings and stricken lamp posts –
I’ll maybe never know
whether a smaller version
has been dug already
& draped with plastic turf
awaiting a new arrival.
