I am convinced
that very often,
the maker of a masterpiece
has no idea about the magnitude of their creation.
Maybe they’re just too close to it,
or maybe a happy accident has imposed itself unknown,
like the inadvertent chord
that adds so much more than was ever intended.

And, yet, for others,
who know full well what they have achieved,
they watch as the rest of the world passes by
without so much as a second glance
and stand to one side
awaiting the acclaim & adulation
that is rightfully theirs
but which never comes.

Well,
maybe it’s just that my masterpiece is different to yours
you say,
– and so it might have been,
except the Mona Lisa is a masterpiece to everyone –
and was known as such by Leonardo.
